NOTE: I changed my default search feature to "Classic" by using TweakUI for XP. I cannot stand that stupid dog and the classic search feature allows more powerful searching. You may be happier disabling the Search Companion and going back to the Classic Search style. Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Then go to: Give the new value the name Use Search Asst Double click the new value and enter "no", without the quotes. This will enable the classic Search window.

I also cannot search for files like I am used to. The folders are available, but not files. Use the Advanced Search Options. System, Hidden, and Subfolders. You can install TweakUI and set the search to the "Classic Search" you're used to. TweakUI is one of the XP PowerToys; Classic Search is in \Explorer.
